Science Makes Me Happy
I've been down lately. It's December which means that it's winter, my favorite season. But it's not cold. Stupid climate change. Warm December = Unhappy Algae Girl :-( Also, our fridge died, which means I've been spending a lot of time at home waiting for our apartment people to figure out whether or not we were getting a new fridge. So I hadn't been in the lab a lot.
I didn't get back until Tuesday. I was in a pretty foul mood Tuesday morning. For the second morning in a row, I'd fallen while running. And after the Monday from hell, this left me sitting on the couch drinking juice and crying. I was not in the mood to be in public. Thankfully the only one who really sees me at work is Lab Tech, and he usually comes in about an hour after I get there.
I got to work and started sullenly collecting pipette tips and cover slips for making diatom slides. By the time I had everything collected, I felt better enough to turn on the GC and even run some samples. At the end of the day, I had made 60 cover slips of diatoms, started a long run of fatty acid samples, and fixed up all my graphs for publication. I was in such a good mood I even cooked dinner when I got home (after staying at work late).
The results of this experience has taught me that I'm happiest when I'm working in the lab. I don't know if that makes me a workaholic or what, but if it keeps me happy then I'll take it!
Also, there's been a lot of wild life out lately at the bio station! In the last few days, I've seen herds of turkeys, many woodpeckers, tons of deer (even a buck!), and a BOBCAT! A fucking BOBCAT! Keep in mind, my lab is just 35 miles north of NYC. And we made eye contact, I bonded with that animal. Hopefully it won't eat me.
