New Blog!

Hi Again!

I told him I would share his blog, so here's a shout-out for it!

Some/Home is a blog by John W. about ecology and conservation in the Bronx/Westchester county area.  It's a very insightful place from a unique citizen scientist perspective.  I highly recommend it!

More Excuses! :-(

Well, I've failed you all again.  There's been another unintentional hiatus.  So, here's just a quick post to explain my absence yet again and to give you a quick update on how the research is going.

Excuses: My computer died!  It died about 2 days before I had a fellowship application due, so I spent a lot of time panicking about getting that in on time and prepping for the accompanying interview.  I've also been swamped with classwork and teaching prep.  I am one of the lead TA's for the courses I'm involved with and the prof's have give me much more creative freedom (i.e. responsibility) for creating and prepping the labs.  So that's taking up time.  I'm also giving a presentation.  Not just the one in May like I'd planned on...but ANOTHER one in April!  Same data, different poster.  This means that my lab and data analysis schedule has been moved up by a whole month.  I've been coming into the lab 7 days a week to count diatom slides, as many as 5 a day!

Upcoming:  I finally heard back from the Watershed Agricultural Council here in NY.  We've exchanged paperwork and now I'm just waiting on the go ahead to start using their data base to pick my sites.  I'm also in contact with my guy at DEP to try and get access to some of the sites that he used for his thesis.  Field season is right around the corner and I'm starting to get worried that I won't have sites in time!  But I must remain calm...it's not May yet...!  I'm also starting to search for field assistants.  I still haven't heard from many of my funding applications so I can't pay anyone anything which adds a layer of difficulty. So, I will be posting on campus to see if any undergrads want research credits to help me.  There is also the possibility I could co-mentor an undergraduate summer student through our CSUR program.  They'd be doing their own project, but it would revolve around mine so they would be in the field with me.  So that's all in the works.

So, to summarize:
  • New computer, staying on top of class and teaching work
  • Just about ready to pick field sites
  • Looking for field help
  • Prepping for 2 conference presentation.
I look back at all this and I'm torn between feeling like a BAMF and a loser playing catch up :-/
